The short version
- No accounts or sign-in are needed to use the calculator.
- The calculator runs in your browser. We do not upload your calculation results to our servers.
- We keep anonymous usage statistics, using analytics software we run ourselves.
- The extension never sends a listing’s address, its exact price, or anything that identifies the vehicle.
- The extension’s usage statistics can be switched off in its own settings.
- The website may show Google AdSense ads, which can use cookies. The extension contains no advertising.
The website
The site has no accounts. The calculation happens in your browser and the result is never uploaded to us. Calculator links can include estimate settings in their URL; anyone you share a link with can read those settings. Like other page URLs, these links can be received by our hosting provider and by services loaded on that page.
The exchange rate the calculator starts from is read from boj.org.jm by our server, on a schedule, not by your browser. Nothing about you reaches the Bank of Jamaica, and typing your own rate over it sends nothing anywhere. When that read fails, the server files that fact in the same analytics — an event about the server, carrying nothing about anybody visiting.
We use Umami, open-source analytics, on our own server at analytics.everone.co. It records which pages are visited without setting cookies and without building a profile that follows you between sites. As any web server does, it receives the IP address your request came from; it uses that to work out an approximate country and to derive a rotating anonymous identifier, and does not keep the address as a record of you.
The extension
Two different things, kept apart on purpose.
Settings, which stay in your browser
Your settings — whether to price at Bank of Jamaica’s rate or one you type, that rate, whether the estimate is shown on vehicle pages and on search results, whether you hold a 20% public sector duty concession, and whether usage statistics are on — are held in the browser’s own extension storage. If you have Chrome sync switched on, Chrome syncs them to your Google account. They are never sent to us.
Usage statistics, which you can switch off
When they are on, the extension sends the same analytics server a short record of what happened on a page:
- which of the three supported exporter sites it ran on;
- whether it found a total quoted to Jamaica, or fell back to the vehicle price alone;
- the body type it read — car, van, pickup, truck;
- whether it priced at the Bank of Jamaica rate or one you set;
- a cost band, one of five, worked out from the estimated total rather than the asking price — such as “2m–4m”;
- on a search page, how many results were found and how many could be priced;
- the extension’s version number.
It also records when the extension is installed or updated, when a page could not be read at all, when the Bank of Jamaica rate could not be fetched, and when you open the breakdown or follow the link to the calculator.
These events reach the same server the website reports to, and as with any web request it receives the IP address they came from. It uses that to work out an approximate country and to derive a rotating anonymous identifier, and does not keep the address as a record of you.
What it never sends:the address of any listing; the vehicle’s exact price, title, make, model, year, stock number or photographs; your name, email address or any account; or anything you type.
The point of collecting any of this is narrow. These estimates are read off pages belonging to other companies, and those pages change without notice. When one does, the badge stops appearing or starts reading the wrong number, and without a signal that it has happened nobody finds out until someone complains.
To switch it off: click the Clearie icon and un-tick Send anonymous usage events. Nothing is sent from that moment on.
What the extension connects to
- boj.org.jm— to read Bank of Jamaica’s published counter exchange rates. Nothing about you is sent.
- analytics.everone.co — the usage statistics above, when they are switched on.
- The three exporter sites — the extension reads the page you already have open, in your browser, to find the price and the specification. That reading never leaves your device.
The extension has no access to any other site. It runs only on BE FORWARD, SBT Japan and Car From Japan.
Website advertising and third parties
We may use Google AdSense to help fund the website. When ads are enabled, third-party vendors, including Google, may use cookies to serve ads based on previous visits to this website or other websites. Google’s advertising cookies allow Google and its partners to personalise ads using those visits, subject to your consent where required. Other ad networks participating through Google may also use cookies.
Ad requests can include your IP address, browser and device information, the page URL and interactions with ads. We do not add calculator form values or calculation results to ad requests. Advertising is separate from our self-hosted, cookieless Umami analytics and does not run in the browser extension.
You can manage personalised advertising through Google My Ad Center, and opt out of some other vendors’ personalised advertising through YourAdChoices. Where a consent message is shown, use its controls to accept, decline or manage your choices. Opting out of personalisation does not necessarily remove ads.
Read how Google uses information from sites that use its services and see Google’s advertising technology providers for information about its advertising partners.
Children
Clearie is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect anything from them.
Changes
Any change is reflected in the date at the top, and anything material will be described on this page rather than made quietly.
